What is your windshield IQ?

North Shore Auto Glass Repair & Replacement

Professional auto glass replacement and repair is critical to your auto's ability to be driven safely as well as everyone's protection. Having sub-standard replacement glass or low-quality installation services is hazardous for everyone in the car.

Your windshield is more than a shield for wind. It is also there to protect you from flying rocks, sand, birds, shredded tires, severe weather and one hundred other likely dangers. What is your windshield IQ?

Most automotive safety experts rank the windshield as the third most important safety component in today’s vehicles, right behind seat-belts and airbags. Laws require seat-belt use and prevent tampering with airbags, but there are no laws about quality windshield replacements.Below are just a few things to be aware of if you need work performed. Discovering the answers before getting any repairs performed will make the experience easier.

To Consider:
  1. Is your new windshield or window OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) certified? If you don't know, you should make it a point to find out before the work is done.
  2. Is the glass professional qualified?
  3. Will the glass company work with your insurance? This is an important question so be sure to ask.
  4. Is there a warranty on the glass? Is it in writing?
  5. Is there any guarantee for the work? If an issue does occur, do you believe it will get taken care of to meet your needs?
All Glass Doctor North Vancouver auto glass experts are fully qualified to make your vehicle's glass it's safest. All of our windshields are OEM certified and we are an ICBC Express location. We can also work with most other insurance providers including those from out of province. All of out windshields come with a G12 Guarantee, in writing  that if you require a windshield replacement within a year of the original date that we replaced it, we will repair your windshield or replace it. Terms & Conditions apply.

Split and raked flat windshield on a 1952 DeSoto.
A little bit of history: Early windshields were made of ordinary window glass, but that could lead to serious injuries in the event of a crash. A series of lawsuits led up to the development of stronger windshields.  They were replaced with windshields made of toughened glass and were fitted in the frame using a rubber or neoprene seal. The hardened glass shattered into many mostly harmless fragments when the windshield broke. These windshields, however, could shatter from a simple stone chip. In 1919, Henry Ford solved the problem of flying debris by using the new French technology of glass laminating. Windshields made using this process were two layers of glass with a cellulose inner layer. This inner layer held the glass together when it fractured. Between 1919 and 1929, Ford ordered the use of laminated glass on all of his vehicles.

Modern, glued-in windshields contribute to the vehicle's rigidity, but the main force for innovation has historically been the need to prevent injury from sharp glass fragments. Almost all nations now require windshields to stay in one piece even if broken, except if pierced by a strong force. Properly installed automobile windshields are also essential to safety; along with the roof of the car, they provide protection to the vehicle's occupants in the case of a roll-over accident

Windshield = Third Most Important Safety Component

Windshield Replacement Safety Tips

Before you get behind the wheel, remember car maintenance isn’t just under the hood.
A cracked windshield is a safety risk. It can impair the driver’s vision and put passengers at risk. Not to mention, most automotive safety experts rank the windshield as the third most important safety component in today’s vehicles, behind seat-belts and airbags. Laws require seat-belt use and prevent tampering with airbags, but there are no laws about windshield replacements.

Consumers should ask these four questions before a replacement windshield installation:

1. Will the old adhesive be removed from the vehicle frame? If the adhesive isn’t removed down to the adhesive manufacturer’s recommended level, the fit may not be tight and the new adhesive won’t bond correctly.

2. Will the technician wear gloves to keep from contaminating the glass? If oil and dirt get on the edges, the new adhesive (called urethane) may not bond correctly.

3. Will the new urethane adhesive stand up to the high deployment pressure of airbags? The best available manufacturer equivalent urethane adhesive should be used, not butyl tape. Ask for adhesive made by Dow, Sika or the original car maker’s adhesive supplier.

4. How long does the urethane adhesive need to set until the vehicle can be driven? Every urethane has a “safe drive-away time.”

The Auto Glass Safety Council™ (AGSC), formerly AGRSS®, promotes safe auto glass industry standards, which an auto glass technician should follow. Glass Doctor voluntarily supports the standard glass replacement procedures approved by AGSC, and Glass Doctor shops offer original equipment manufactured (OEM) windshields. Only OEM glass can provide the quality necessary to ensure a proper fit, which greatly reduces the safety risks.

Our Community Plan for 2013

*** Feedback much appreciated***

In year two of our business we began making donations to the North Shore Crisis Services Society, in recognition of the repeat and referral business that we receive on the North Shore.  We have donated over $5,000 to this charity that supports Women and Children in crisis.

NSCSS Mission Statement

"To promote a secure and abuse-free environment for women and children." www.nscss.net

It is our goal this year to see our donated funds break the $10,000 mark.  In addition to our monetary commitment we are looking to support Laura Reynolds and the Team at NSCSS with In Kind support.  It is our plan to attend any fund raising events and provide stone chip repairs by donation-all funds going to NSCSS.  We will also be donating our time/expertise and materials at a fall 2013 Auction.  $2,000 towards a Custom Shower - Mirrored Wall - Foggy Windows +++ watch for details and an opportunity to save money plus support this community based organization.

In addition to the North Shore Crisis Services Society we would like to expand our support as our business continues to grow.  Our ideas for this year include the following; through the business we compile a great deal of reward points and would like to purchase merchandise from these points and make it available for local charities to Auction off.  As part of this program any Auction that we are supporting with merchandise we would like to Auction off our services with a material component as well. With this "program" we are leaning towards supporting our local schools, sports teams, or individual students with scholarship funds.  We are open to suggestions but would like our support to stay here on the North Shore, and would like 100% of funds raise going directly to the Team, School, or Individual Scholarship.

Everywhere we turn organizations are requiring support from the community to deliver their services and programs – we believe as a Community if we support businesses that are making a difference locally this can be a vehicle for these organizations to raise funds through the purchasing power of the consumer.
Please forward any request for Auction Donations (supporting North Shore organizations) to John Goldsmith @ glassdoctor@shawbiz.ca.

Thank you to our Customers for your ongoing support!

Community Driven Business & Our Customers

One of the key components of what we have tried to do as a business is recognize who are customers are and what we need to do to meet and hopefully exceed expectations.  When we talk about our community and customers there are several thought processes that enter into our decisions. North and West Vancouver (where the majority of our work comes from) is a tech savvy, middle and upper middle class community made up of a diverse group of individuals and families. As our community and population have grown there has remained a sense of community and people are very much engaged in a vast range of community activities.  What we believe to be true is the residents of the North Shore actively network and communicate with one another.  We have deduced that this is partly based on the work environments our customers are engaged in. In our eyes this makes our job both potentially easier and definitely more satisfying.

So two questions that as a small business we need to answer is how do we actively engage our customers, and when making decisions do our customers factor in "Our Story" as a small based business active in our community?

To start with the second question first; I do believe that this can and does play a role but the onus is on us as a business to tell "Our Story".  Beyond telling more about who we are, what we do, and the level of service we provide.  We must explain how we are engaged with our community and how we are striving to make a difference.  I also believe that as noble as community efforts or donations maybe today it is important that we continue to expand and make our contributions part of our culture as a company.

To actively engage our customers is our number one priority on a go forward.  It is our hope to utilize Social Networking and promote our activities both as what it is we offer and do to make a profit but also equally as important how we endeavour to make a difference on the North Shore as a small business.

Excellent. Called Bronco and Speedy for windshield repair and they would not bother to do the job until next week. Called these guys, and was in at 9am, had a loaned car, they did a great job, and a free window clean solution with free chip repair in the future. Love these guys! Would not recommend anyone else!

I had a wind shield crack and I went to speedy glass to get it checked up. They quoted about 90 dollars. I thought I would call another place and found glass doctor. Their website is mobile friendly and immediately showed closest location to where I was. I called up the north vancouver location and right away I knew they were very honest people. The price they quoted was very fair and they explained the process of the repair and fixed my windshield promptly and also left a can of glass cleaner in my car. They are real honest and nice people. I would recommend this place to anyone and they now have a customer for life.

The service I received from the team at Glass Doctor North Vancouver was exceptional - excellent work, friendly staff, quick turn around time, and competitively priced. They are a true gem of a business here on the North Shore! Knock on wood I won't need to replace another car window in the near future but, if I do, I would absolutely bring my car back to Glass Doctor North Vancouver.

Superb Service...Excellent Work...Exceptionally Friendly...Unbeatable Price...I was in and out with a driver's side mirror replacement within 15 minutes...but I could have stayed and chatted with them for half an hour. They do business the old fashioned way...with integrity. This is a "family owned business"...and they make you feel like part of their family.

So happy with the service! Great bunch of people there. Thought the whole claim thing would be a hassle, last time I changed a windscreen I had to go to the ICBC drive thru. All I had to do was go to Glass Doc and switch cars - the free loaner car kept my day on track. When I came back I paid my 200 signed the insurance sheet and I was on my way again and my car was so clean. Thank you Glass Doctors.

What outstanding customer service! The best in any industry I've ever dealt with. I needed my windshield replaced, and in 20 min. John was at my door to pick up my car and leave me keys to a courtesy vehicle. The service was done earlier than estimated, and my car was returned better than I left it, as well as with complimentary glass cleaner for me in the front seat. I will recommend them to everyone. They made doing business a pleasure.

The Glass Doctor kindly stayed open late both for the drop-off and pick-up of my car. They also provided a very nice Mazda 3 rental car on short notice so that my windshield replacement could be done while I was at work. The windshield replacement was perfect and my car was left in very nice condition. Thanks!

In the last 12 months, we have had a bathroom window replaced, two shower glass doors installed, and two windshield chip repairs on one of our cars. I originally went to them for free advice on bathroom glass installations and was so impressed I ended up giving them the work. The service and after sales service have been exceptional - these guys get it! I have no hesitation in recommending the Glass Doctors.

I also just got in from picking up my car and am impressed that they took the time to clean an already clean car. From exchanging my keys for a Mazda 3 to picking up the vehicle, what makes the experience great, is that the people are not just paid to be friendly, they just are friendly. Thank You!

I put off replacing the passenger mirror as I thought the van was too old to bother with the cost and it would be too difficult to find the part. Jacquie quoted me such a low price and the mirror was there within a couple of hours. The mirror was replaced and a door fixed as well. It wasn't until I was driving away that I noticed the previously filthy vehicle had been completely vacuumed! Several days later I needed a windshield replaced on another vehicle. The Glass Doctor brought the windshield to my truck and replaced it on site. I didn't have to do anything. Amazing service. I will recommend to all my friends.

A couple of weeks ago I unfortunately was the victim of a car break-in. I discovered it on a Saturday morning and the guys at Glass Doctor took care of it immediately, gave me a ride to where I was headed, got the replacement glass in that day, did a great job of cleaning all the glass fragments out of the door and carpets, drove into the West End on a Saturday evening to return my vehicle to me, and while they had my vehicle fixed a couple of rock chips for a very reasonable price too!
